Indian archer Deepika Kumari has raised hopes once again in the Olympic year by shooting a world record-equaling total in the women’s recurve event of the Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China. At first stage of the World Cup in Shanghai, Deepika equaled the Ki Bo-bae's world record of (686/720) in the women's recurve event.
Deepika’s effort also enabled India to get a top ranking in mixed pair as she partnered 12th ranked Atanu Das (671 points) to defeat Turkey 5-3 in the first round of eight.
Importantly, she is a former world No.1 and winner of two Commonwealth Games gold medals. She won a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth games in the women's individual recurve event. She has also won a gold medal in the same competition in the women's team recurve event.
Ms. Kumari qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where she competed in the Women's Individual and Women's team events, finishing in eighth place in the latter. Importantly, even in 2012, in the run up to the London Olympic Games she has raised her game to such a level that it propelled her to the world no.1 position in the rankings. Hope she will continue with her superb form till the Rio Olympics and this time will help India getting some much-needed laurels. The expectations are really HIGH from her.
