A 21 year-old, Indian-origin student, Shani Patel, was shot and killed, at an off-campus apartment building in Newark, New Jersey, in the US. His room-mate was also seriously injured in the attack. He was a junior economics major at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
The Rutgers Police say the shooting was not random and that the campus which serves some 12,000 students was not under threat. However, the two assailants believed to be in their early to mid-20's fled the scene.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s office and Newark Public Safety Director said no suspects have been identified so far and no arrests have been conducted. The investigation is presently underway. A $10,000 reward has been posted for information leading to an arrest in the killing of Patel.
The school district spokeswoman Tammi Millar said in a written statement, “It is hard whenever we lose such a young alumnus, but to lose Shani to violence is shocking. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shani’s family during this unimaginable and very sad time”. The Rutgers University Chancellor Nancy Cantor also expressed sadness at Patel’s death and sent her deepest condolences to his family and friends.
