The Indian community in Houston, Texas, contributed and raised funds to build a Mahatma Gandhi statue in Houston's Little India.

Indian-Americans celebrated India's 69th Independence Day in their own special way. They paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by unveiling his bronze statue in Houston, Texas, a day after the Independence.
The statue was unveiled at the entrance of 'Little India', an area off Hillcroft Avenue in Texas. It is a marble monument having a bronze engraving of Gandhi ji's face.
'This is a fitting monument', said Harish Parvathaneni, the Consul General of India.
Indian community raised funds of $25,000 to construct the statue and co-ordinated with the city officials for the work.
The first draft was again redesigned as it did not look like Mahatma Gandhi. Around 125,000 people of Indian origin live in Houston.
"Gandhi is famous for his saying, 'We should be the change that we seek.' It is obvious that the community has taken up this cause," said Al Green, US Representative.
