The Veteran actor Manoj Kumar has been bestowed with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award for his contribution to the cinema. The 78-year-old actor will be honoured with the prestigious 47th DadasahebPhalke Award for the year 2015.
Kumar was born as Harikrishna Giri Goswami in Abbottabad, which was then a part of Pre-Independent India. He started as romantic hero but is remembered best for his in depth performances in patriotic movies. He is best known for his patriotic roles in films such as Upkaar, shaheed, and Purab Aur Pashchim. He was also called ‘Bharat Kumar’ by his fans cause of the strong roles he played. Till date, for his outstanding contribution to the cinema he has won 7 film fare awards and he was awarded with Padma Shri Award by the Indian Government in the year 1992.
Kumar said the announcement came as a surprise and he thought it was a joke. “I am very happy to receive this honour from the government. I did not expect it. I was sleeping when Ashoke Pandit called me. I couldn’t believe it initially, I thought he was fooling me. He asked me to watch TV so that’s how I learnt about it,” Manoj Kumar said adding that “I will go to Delhi to receive the award”. Kumar’s name was unanimously recommended by a five-member jury consisting of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Salim Khan, Nitin Mukesh and Anup Jalota.
According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, he will be honoured with a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs and a shawl. The Dada Saheb Phalke award 2015 will be conferred to the veteran actor at the 63rd National Films awards event that will be conducted on 3rd of May, 2016.
