A team of researchers, with one of them being of Indian-origin have succeeded in making an astounding invention, converting carbon dioxide from thin air into methanol fuel.
This discovery can prove to be a turning point in the near future as it can create a sustainable fuel source from greenhouse gas emissions. This is a step towards lessening the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and dealing with global warming.
A professor of chemistry in the University of South California, GK Surya Prakash said, “Indian-origin researcher converts carbon dioxide from thin air into clean burning fuel”. He headed this work along with his colleague, George Olah of University of Southern California (USC).
Prakash and Olah hope that within a span of 5-10 years they will be able to improve the procedure to the extent that it could be scaled up for industrial use. In the laboratory, the researchers also demonstrated that they were able to run the process five times with only minimal loss of the effectiveness of the catalyst.
