Magnitude 6.9 earthquake strikes Solomon Islands

An earthquake of 6.9 magnitude struck off the Solomon Islands. No warning was issued for the tremor prone region.
The shallow earthquake was centred some 186 kms southwest of Dadali and 214 kms from the capital city Honiara.
The Hawaii based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, measured the earthquake at 6.9 magnitude. They further quoted that a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected.
'The Solomons are a part of the 'Pacific Ring of Fire', a zone of tectonic activity known for it's frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and these types of tremors were common in this region',said seismologist Hugh Glanville.
It is one of the most active seismic regions in the world. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck last month off the coast of the island chain.
No damage from that tremor was reported.
