Dr. Amit Majmudar, an Indian-American nuclear radiologist from Dublin has been named the first Poet Laureate by the US state of Ohio for exhibiting a range of styles in his poetry. Governor John Kasich who created the honor, titled Dr. Majmudar to the two-year honorary position. This took place a year after the law creating the position of the state’s official poet was sanctioned.
Honouring the Indian-American poet, the Governor Kasich said “The first poet laureate will bring a unique perspective to this new role and is a powerful example to our young people that regardless of what career they choose to pursue, they can always tap into their other passions”.
Expressing his happiness, Dr. Majmudar said that he now intends to bring an inter-disciplinary approach promoting poetry by establishing a link with the existing, Ohio arts community during his two-year tenure. He also said that, engaging Ohio high school students through a variety of means to encourage the future of poetry in Ohio will be another vital aspect of his outreach.
Throughout his medical career, Dr. Majmudar has nurtured his poet, novelist and essayist skills. He has published two novels, and his poetry has also appeared in numerous publications.
His two-year honorary term begins from January 1, 2016.
