Veteran Bollywood actress Sadhana, popular for the ‘Sadhana Cut’ hairstyle, recently passed away in Mumbai after a long battle with cancer.

Yesteryear famous actress Sadhana passed away on Friday (December 25) at Hinduja hospital in Mumbai. She was 74 and is survived by her foster daughter.

Sadhana was one of the fashion icons of India during the 60's. Bollywood actors have also always been a primary source changing the trend of fashion and Sadhana had a fair share of contribution in boosting this trend. From her Hollywood actor Audrey Hepburn-styled fringe to her critically acclaimed films, the veteran actor Sadhana was a trailblazer in several ways.  The popular hairstyle inspired by Audrey Hepburn was her signature hair style. It became a fan-favourite and hence was introduced in the industry as the ‘Sadhana Cut’. With the help of fashion designer Bhanu Athaiya, she also started the trend of tight 'churidar kurtas', first featured in Yash Chopra's Waqt.

Sadhana was born in Karachi. Her family moved to India and settled in Mumbai when she was barely seven years old following the partition. Born in a Sindhi family, Sadhana had her lineage towards movies. She was a cousin of yesteryear’s actress Babita.  She entered the films as a child actress in 1955 with a minor appearance in Raj Kapoor's film Shree 420.

She was then promoted by Sashadhar Mukherjee, one of the noted producers of that time who gave her the break in his production opposite to the newbie Joy Mukherjee in Love in Simla (1960). She soon worked opposite Dev Anand in Hum Dono (1962). Some of her other best-known movies include Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962),  Asli Nakli (1962), Prem Patra (1962), Man-Mauji (1962), Mere Mehboob (1963), Rajkumar(1964), Waqt (1965), Who Kaun Thi (1964) and Mera Sayaa  (1966). Sadhana retired from movies after 1974 movie Geeta Mera Naam. Her last film was Ulfat Ki Nayee Manzilen (1994).

A top rung star in the 1960s and 1970s, Sadhana even portrayed few grey characters when the leading heroes of the era shied away from such roles. Two of her best films -- Woh Kaun Thi and Mera Saaya -- had her delivering performances which were miles away from what leading ladies were expected to do in her time.

Bollywood celebrities such as Lata Mangeshkar, Rishi Kapoor, Sonu Nigam, Anupam Kher and others have mourned the death of yesteryear actress.

Lata Mangeshkar tweeted - I just got to know my favourite actress Sadhana ji’s, sudden demise. May her soul Rest in Peace.
