The 2016 ICC World Twenty20 (T-20) will be the sixth ICC World T-20 tournament and is scheduled to be held in India from 8th March to 3rd April, 2016.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), after its first meeting in Dubai on 28 January 2015, awarded India the rights to host the World T-20 championship in 2016. For the second time, the tournament will feature 16 teams. All ten full members has qualified automatically, and are joined by the six Associate Members that qualified through the 2015 ICC World T-20 Qualifier, played in Ireland and Scotland during July 2015.

These six qualifying teams include Scotland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Oman. Prior to the qualifying tournament, Oman only had Twenty20 status, but with their progression to their first World Twenty20 tournament, has gained full Twenty20 International status.

The top eight teams in the ICC T-20 Championship rankings automatically progress to the Super 10 stage, unless one of the top eight is an associate in which case the next ranked full member will progress in their place. The remaining eight teams compete in the group stage, from which two teams advance to the Super 10 stage.

The ICC and BCCI are fully committed and will work together to make this a memorable event. I invite fans from across the world to witness fast-paced cricketing action on the field and enjoy the hospitality and culture of India, off it….the ICC World Twenty20 is an event which puts the world’s best cricketers in the shortest format of the game against each other in a nation versus nation contest”, said the ICC Chief Executive David Richardson promising a successful tournament.

The BCCI Secretary Mr Anurag Thakur said, “We, as hosts, are fully prepared to organise one of the most entertaining spectacles in world cricket. We draw experience from hosting three ICC Cricket World Cups and are ready to make the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 one of the most memorable events”.

Presently, the island nation SriLanka is the defending T-20 champions.
