Prominent Indian American entrepreneur and philanthropist Frank Islam will receive the UP Ratna award from the government of Uttar Pradesh (UP), at the inaugural UP Pravasi Diwas program to be held in Agra early next year.

NRI Frank Islam, 63, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, who was born in Azamgarh district and studied at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will be honoured by UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at the inaugural UP Pravasi Diwas in Agra on January 4, 2016. He will be felicitated with the Uttar Pradesh Ratna Award for his achievements and outstanding contributions in a foreign country. 

In a statement Mr. Islam said, "Uttar Pradesh is where my journey started. It is where I grew up and spent the formative years. I am humbled and delighted to be honoured by the state of Uttar Pradesh". He went to the US in the early 1970s to study at the University of Colorado where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in the Computer Science. He founded Information Technology firm QSS in 1994 and built his company from being himself the sole employee, to having over 2,000 employees and sales of $300 million, before he sold the company in 2007. 

Mr. Islam has donated $2 million to AMU for the construction of a new school of management. He now heads the FI Investment Group, a private investment holding company that he established in 2007.  He has also authored two books – ‘Working the Pivot Points to Make America Work Again’ (2013); and ‘Renewing the American Dream – A Citizen’s Guide for Restoring Our Competitive Advantage’ (2010).

The UP Ratna award was instituted to recognize achievements and contributions of NRIs who hail from the state. The recipients of the award are felicitated with a shawl, citation certificate and memento.
