A major initiative is taken to
revive the golden era of Malabar football by a NRI football enthusiast and
businessman, Dr. Siddiq Ahmed by reviving the popular football tournament in
Kerala. He aims to revive the annual football tournament after a gap of twenty
years and also ensuring that at least one member of an average household from
Kerala shows interest in the game, which will also help in overall development
of kids. A new football academy will be set up in Kozhikode in association with
the Madrid Club and train professional footballers from the state.
“The SaitNagjee Trophy Football Tournament was started in 1952 in Calicut, Kerala and continued till 1995. Due to various reasons including the predominance gained by cricket, lack of support from the government and the escalation of real estate costs made football less popular, but now the tournament will be restarted from next year. My dream is to regain the golden period in Indian football starting from Malabar” said Dr. Siddiq Ahmed, who was himself a football player in his youth days. Further adding, “My contribution to society is something that I have learnt from my parents. They have always been soft and generous to people's sufferings and what I do today is what I have seen growing up. It's an irreplaceable part of my life”.
Dr. Siddiq leads one of the region's most diverse conglomerates, with over 40 plus entities spread across 12 countries. Dr. Siddiq Ahmed is the Chairman & Managing Director of Eram Group, which is a powerin Industrial Contracting, Project Management Solutions, Automotive, Health Care, Travel, IT, Manufacturing, Power Electronics, Trading, Floor Covering, Product representation & other commercial services. He supports several charity initiatives in partnership with Governments, Trusts, NGOs and individuals besides his own projects. He is also hailed as a “toilet man”, after he successfully started over 1,200 e-toilets across 18 Indian states.
The SaitNaagji cup football tournament will be held in Kozhikode from January 22 with the participation of eight international teams from Germany, Argentina, Spain (two teams each), and one team each from Brazil and India. The Sait Nagjee Trophy Football Tournament began in 1952 in Calicut and continued till mid-nineties, it is therefore after a gap of around twenty years when the revival of the popular ‘Malabar’ football tournament will take place.
