The ruling party in India, the BJP, has announced the candidature of NRI doctor Pagadipati Devaiah for Warangal loksabha by election. The BJP, in support of its NDA partner TDP, is fielding the candidate in the Lok Sabha by-election which is set to witness a quadrangle contest between the TRS, Congress, YSRCP and NDA.
Warangal by polls is expected to witness a quadrangle fight between the political parties in the newly formed Telangana state. The by-elections have also heated up the political discourse in the state along with the TRS party in Telangana, even Congress, BJP-TDP and YSRCP are keen on contesting in these elections.
The lok sabha elections concluded the previous year witnessed thousands of Indians returning home to act as volunteers or even stand as candidates in India's elections. Such NRI candidates are expected to use their overseas experience to help modernize political parties and improve the way campaigning is conducted. Separately, in a welcome gesture the Indian government has recently allowed the NRIs to cast their vote through electronic-ballots or through their nominees residing in India.
The 69-year-old Devaiah is a qualified pediatric anesthesiologist from the prestigious Harvard University. He is also an entrepreneur running software companies in the US and Telangana, in India.
