Vikas Bahl's directorial film "Shaandaar" (Shandaar) continues to drop at the domestic box office. The romantic comedy movie has reportedly failed to impress the audience and registered not so good collections in its early days of release since 22 October 2015. The movie was advertised as a destination wedding film. It seems that the movie relies more on the charm of its leading actors than its screenplay.
The film is a love story between two insomniacs’ characters. Insomnia, or the trouble sleeping, is a sleeping disorder in which there is an inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep as long as desired. The story of the movie goes like this — Vipin Arora (Pankaj Kapoor) has two daughters Alia (Alia Bhatt) and Isha (Sanah Kapoor). Sushma Seth, Vipin’s mother, is shown as a greedy and cunning lady. She wants Isha to marry into a wealthy Sindhi family of Harry Fandwani (Sanjay Kapoor).
JagjinderJoginder JJ (Shahid Kapoor) is hired as wedding planner for Isha’s marriage and comes to know that her sister Alia who is suffering from insomnia and had also not slept well for the past 25 years. JJ is himself an insomniac, which resulted in a natural friendship and later in love between the two. However, Vipin is against their friendship and is very possessive about his daughter. Later it is discovered that Alia is born out of wedlock and is Vipin's illegitimate daughter.
The film is low on humour apart from some LOL jokes, such as abbreviations for words like pairi-pauna (PP), father-of-the-bride (FTB), etc. However, the film presents scenes at a good pace. It is also believed that the emphasis on presenting things in a funny manner has perhaps led down the film. In addition, the writers fail to control the predictable story as they were burdened with sounding to be funny every now and then.
Shahid and Alia are talented actors and the director could have presented their role in a better manner. Pankaj Kapur is brilliant with his role. However, the lack of efficient screenplay has reportedly let down the film. Meanwhile, the film has opened well at the overseas box office, with international income bringing some relief to its makers. The opening weekend overseas box office collection of the movie is approximately $2 million and the combined total of the overseas and domestic box office collection stands at around $8 million, till date.
