A case of mistaken identity of a deceased NRI person remains unsolved till now.

Ranjit Singh Powar 54, a UK-based Indian origin hotelier, had come to India on a business trip and reportedly was missing after since early May. Meanwhile, the Indian police claimed that his body had been recovered from a forest near Anandpur Sahib District, which is 80 Km from Chandigarh. The body had been identified by Darshan Singh, the businessman’s family friend. However, the body that was flown to Ranjit’s family members in UK was found to be a different one as the dental records and DNA of the body did not match the family’s samples.

The family members informed the media that it was a very painful experience for them to find the body of a different person. Currently, the family members are using social media to trace Powar.

Meanwhile, the case has taken a new turn in India. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, Rajinder Singh Baldev Singh Deol, Powar’s friend and business partner, and Sukhdev Singh, Baldev’s driver and nephew, had killed Powar on 8 May at Anandpur Sahib in Ropar district and then thrown his body in Bhakra canal in Ropar. He also stated that the deceased body is yet to be recovered and he has cross-checked that the body found in the forests near Anandpur was a different body. Rajinder Singh had informed reporters that Rajinder added that Baldev had returned to Britain on 15 May after apparently committing the crime. It is believed that the dispute over a property may be the cause of the crime. Both Sukhdev Singh and Deol face charges under section 302 (punishment for murder) and section 365 (kidnapping or abducting) of the Indian Penal Code. The Indian Police said they will try to get the remand of Sukh Dev Singh and start extradition of Deol from Britain.
