The Three Indian families have featured in Forbes 'Asia's Richest Families' list. The Ambani family including both Mukesh and Anil, with a cumulative wealth of $21.5 billion featured at the third position as India’s first entrant into the list.

The other two Indian families that feature in the top ten include the Premjis and the Mistrys, placed at seventh and tenth position, respectively. Wipro’s Premji family has an estimated net worth of $17 billion and Shapoorji Pallonji Group’s Mistry family has that of approximately $15 billion.

The inaugural list of the Forbes' 50 richest families in Asia features fourteen Indian families including Godrej family at 15th position  with a fortune of US $11.4 billion, ArcelorMittal group's Mittals (19th position , US $10.1 billion), Birlas (22nd position , US $7.8 billion), Bajajs (29th position , US$ 5.6 billion), Dabur India's Burmans (30th position , US $5.5 billion), Cadila Healthcare's Patels (33rd position , US $4.8 billion), and the Eicher Group's Lals at (40th position, US $4 billion).

The eligibility criterion for making to the list was that a family’s wealth and participation in building the fortune extending to at least three generations. For this very reason, nearly half of the richest families in Asia were the Chinese, but none could make it on this list as they all were the first generation entrepreneurs.
