For women's safety, the Indian government is considering introducing a panic button in mobile phones and has instructed all mobile phone manufacturers to work out the feasibility of such a feature.

In a move to strengthen the women safety in India, the central government is considering introducing a panic button in the mobile phones.

According to the Indian central Women and Child Development Minister Ms. Maneka Gandhi, “when they asked for suggestions on precautions for women they were flooded with ideas including wearing specialized necklaces, bracelets and rings that had SOS message sending features”. She said considering the limitations of these devices, the government has come up with an idea of having in-built panic button in all mobile phones.

The government has reportedly asked all mobile phone manufacturers in India to work out the feasibility, to include a ‘panic button’ feature as the government opines that the emergency response apps may perhaps take too long to access in an emergency.

"The phones will have a panic button which will be GPS connected. We are in conversation with phone manufacturers and the proposal is likely to be executed in few months", the Minister said.
