Indian-origin Priya Serrao Indian-origin Priya Serrao, 27, was recently crowned as Miss Universe Australia. Ms. Serrao will represent Australia at the Miss Universe competition next year in South Korea.
Following a glittery finale in Priya defeated 28 other finalists to claim the coveted beauty title in Melbourne on 27th June, 2019. “I still can’t believe everything that’s happened in the last 24 hours. A huge thank you for all your support so far. I can’t wait to get started!”, captioned an all elated Priya as she announced her victory on Instagram with this photo.
The Indian-origin lady is a law and policy advisor from the state of Victoria. She was born in Belmannu, Karnataka, but spent most of her early childhood in Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Serrao moved to Australia when she was 11. Having graduated from law she said her proudest moment is completing an internship with the UN Development Programme in Timor-Leste. Describing the move to Australia as ‘challenging,’ Ms Serrao said initially she felt that she 'didn’t fit in anywhere.'
“I found it hard to understand the accent and people would make fun of mine. I didn’t know who the celebrities were or what slang was. I just didn’t fit in anywhere and felt awkward,” said Ms Serrao. Reacting to her win, Ms Serrao’s father William Serrao said, “She has done well. We are proud of her achievement. This was the first beauty pageant she ever entered. And her social work with United Nations in East Timor and OakTree Foundation is also part of her success”.
Interestingly, Ms Serrao is not the first pageant winner of Indian background living outside India who will represent a country in the Miss Universe contest. Previously, Nina Davuluri from America and Priyanka Yoshikawa from Japan represented their countries in the coveted global pageant in 2013 and 2016 respectively, but none went on to win the international title outside their home countries.
