Diane Gujarati, identified as a prosecutor of the Indian descent, was nominated to a Federal Judgeship by the US President, Donald Trump. Being a preference of the then President, Barack Obama for the same position, she was appointed to this position on May 10th, 2018.
Being the deputy chief of the criminal division of the federal prosecutor’s office for New York’s Southern District, which is of a major high profile jurisdiction she will now proceed towards the Senate for affirmation. This jurisdiction includes parts of New York like Wall Street and Albany along with the suburbs on Long Island.
Having the support of both the parties’ presidents, she is supposed to gain a convincing confirmation. Moreover, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association is in her favor for her confirmation to the bench. “I urge the Senate to quickly confirm Ms. Gujarati to the court” is what the President of NAPABA states.
The Indian-American Judge has worked as a prosecutor for the Southern District of New York since 1999, rising to her current position in 2012. Before becoming a prosecutor, Ms. Gujarati worked as an associate at the New York firm Davis Polk & Wardwell. Importantly, earlier the previous President Barack Obama had nominated her to serve as a judge on the Eastern District of New York, but the Republican controlled Senate took no action on her nomination. It is now, that Trump has nominated her to the same position.
Importantly, President Donald Trump has recently announced the nominations of 10 new judges, including one to the Ninth Circuit and seven to courts across New York.
