Every Indian citizen living abroad will soon be able to participate in the much-celebrated Indian elections using the electronic-ballot (e-balloting) systems. The NRIs wanting to vote through this procedure are required to first register online for the e-postal voting, at least six months prior to the expiry of the term of the legislative house. They will also be required to download and print all the necessary documents and return them back as per the instructions of Election Commission of India (ECI). These electors can access their rights through their respective passwords that would be allotted to them, and each NRI voter will also be provided with a ‘unique’ identity to ensure voter’s confidentiality.

As per the prevalent law so far, the NRI name was mandated to be obliterated from the voters' list - if he or she is not staying at their respective Indian residence for a period of six months at a stretch. Importantly, the Indian government fulfilling this longstanding demand of the Indian expatriate community; has acknowledged the necessity for having “legitimate voting rights” for NRIs. Approximately 11 million NRI voters would receive their voting rights from this proposed system. The entire procedure is a part of the proposal to amend the Representation of the People Act of 1950 and the Representation of the Peoples, 1951.
