India’s TT players Manika Batra (21) and Mouma Das (33) have created history by becoming the first Indian pair to reach the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships. The pair received a walkover from their opponents Li Jie of the Netherlands and Li Qian of Poland as Li Qian had suffered a stomach problem. The event is held in Dusseldorf, Germany. The duo will now take on the No. 1 and 2 Chinese players, Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen in an upcoming match.
The 33-year-old Das said, "I don't know what to even feel. It's just sad that our opponents could not play the match. But at the same time, I am so elated that we have created history for our country…we were well prepared for the match anyway. We practiced against defenders to get the feel. I am actually still shocked that we got a walkover. But we have created history, it is special”.
The event being held since 1926 is being organized biennially since 1957. Five individual events comprising men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s double and mixed doubles are currently held as a part of the championships. The next world TT championships will be held in Budapest in the year 2019.
