Love Triangle turned lethal, female suspect convicted to 18 years jail term in Australia

On Monday, 21st September, the Australian New South Wales (NSW) Supreme Court sentenced a 32 year old Indian-origin female, Ms. Manisha Patel, to 18 years in jail for the murder of her ex-lover's fiancée, Ms. Purvi Joshi.

Ms. Purvi Joshi, who had moved to Sydney from India with planned wedding in November 2013, was found dead by her fiancé Mr. Niraj Dave in his Sydney's Kyeemagh apartment on July 30th, 2013. A knife was found sticking out of her abdomen.

In July 2015, Ms. Patel was found guilty of murdering Ms. Joshi. The convict was reportedly in an intimate relationship with Niraj Dave. She even went for an abort in March 2012. Soon, she realized that her partner was getting married to another woman. She first assisted Mr. Dave in finding a suitable accommodation and as per the plan, on one cold night in July 2013; Manisha out of covetousness and rage went to Mr. Dave’s flat and repeatedly stabbed Purvi till her death, while Dave was out performing his livelihood duties of a security guard at the Sydney Airport.

While pronouncing the sentence, the NSW Supreme Court observed, "Ms Joshi had become the focus of [Patel's] resentment. She unknowingly walked into a psycho-drama not of her own making…the breakdown of their lengthy sexual relationship, her failure to find a suitable husband, and the abortion were a source of shame and sadness”. The court further observed that “Ms Joshi's death was a serious example of murder, and that defensive injuries showed there had been violent struggle… [Ms Joshi] must have felt both overwhelmed with confusion ... and overcome with terror. At some point she must have known she was fighting for her life and felt it ebbing away”.
