Indian paddler Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, 24, has won the Belgium Open title of the table tennis in the men’s singles category. With this remarkable achievement, the Indian paddler becomes only the second Indian table tennis player, after Achanta Sharath Kamal won the 2012 event, to win an International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) event as he clinched the men's singles category title of the Belgium Open.
Sathiyan, a 152 ranked player, won his first pro title by defeating the Belgian Nuytinck Cedric 4-0 in the final 15-13, 11-6, 11-2, 17-15 at De Haan in front of his home fans. He made it to the finals by upsetting several high ranked players in his earlier rounds. He inflicted heavy casualties by first taking out world number 103 Jon Persson and then upsetting, world number 75 Steffen Mengel in the quarterfinals. Aggressive play has been a recent addition to Sathiyan's arsenal and has brought him success.
Sathiyan, who was the educated as an engineer, was also a member of the Indian team that took the bronze in the 2011 Junior World Championships.
