The celebrated Indian politician, Subramanian Swamy, 77 has been honoured with 'Tamil Ratna' award by America Tamil Sangam (ATS) in New York, the US. He was bestowed with this award for fighting corruption and working for more transparency in the functioning of the government The BJP leader is currently on a visit to the US.
Swamy is politician and a renowned economist who is presently serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha. As an economist, he had served as a member of the erstwhile Planning Commission boards. He was a Cabinet Minister in the Chandra Shekhar government. Swamy was also appointed as Chairman of the Commission on Labour Standards and International Trade by former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. He has written on various foreign affairs of India dealing largely with People's Republic of China (PRC), Pakistan and Israel. Dr. Swamy is also a fierce orator and is not known for mincing words, for this reason he often finds himself in hot water by making controversial statements.
Some of the previous recipients of Tamil Ratna Award include Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman, Bharatha Natyam exponent Kamala Lakshman, Tamil movie director Bharathi Raja and mathematician Srinivasa Varadhan.
