Haryana has won ‘Best Horticulture State’ award for the concerted efforts made by the state government to increase the income of the farmers in horticulture.
In Haryana, approximately 2.5 lakh hectares of land of the state is under horticulture and a target has been set to increase it up to 9 lakh hectares.
The best agriculture state award in 2016 went to Odisha. It was awarded with the award in recognition of the efforts towards development of agriculture and bringing rural prosperity. It should also be noted that the eastern Indian state Odisha has received the 9th Global Agriculture Leadership Award 2016 in the best agriculture state category for its major policy initiatives in farm sector by the Indian Council for Food and Agriculture. Odisha recorded 22.7 percent growth in food gains production from 96.36 lakh MTs in 2013-14 to 118.24 lakh MTs during 2014-15.
Horticulture is the branch of agriculture that deals with the art, science, technology, and business of growing plants. It includes the cultivation of medicinal plants, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, sprouts, mushrooms, algae, flowers, seaweeds and non-food crops such as grass and ornamental trees and plants. Inside agriculture, horticulture contrasts with extensive field farming as well as animal husbandry.
