Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze medal from the 2012 London Summer Olympics is upgraded to silver .As the silver medallist, the late BesikKudukhov of Russia, tested positive for doping. Kudukhov was found to have used a banned substance in a test conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). He had died in a car crash in 2013 in southern Russia. As a result, Yogeshwar, who had bagged a bronze medal in men’s 60kg freestyle category in the London Games.
During 2012 London Olympics, Yogeshwar Dutt’s had lost the pre-quarterfinal, but got a chance to win the bronze medal. Dutt defeated Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico, Masoud Esmaeilpour of Iran and Ri Jong-myong of North Korea and secured a bronze medal.
With this up-gradation, India’s silver medal tally in Olympics has gone to five. Indian Silver medallists include wrestler Sushil Kumar (2012 London Olympics) and shooters Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004 Athens Olympics), Vijay Kumar (2012 London Olympics) and Shuttle PV Sindu (2016 Rio Olympics).
However, Yogeshwar Dutt has reportedly cut short the celebration, tweeting that he has the utmost respect for the deceased and his family. He further tweeted that he will not be accepting the upgrade and stated that the medal should instead stay with the family of the deceased wrestler. He said that human feelings are paramount for him. The final status is still to be known.
