Noted filmmaker Aishwaryaa Dhanush was appointed United Nations Women’s Advocate for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in India. In her new role she will help raise awareness of UN Women’s core message of gender equality and women’s empowerment across India. Besides she will play important role in boosting the organisation’s efforts to close the gender gap and achieve a more equal world, a Planet 50-50 by the year 2030.
Aishwaryaa Dhanush, who is the eldest daughter of Tamil Super star Rajnikanth and actor Dhanush’s wife, is a filmmaker, dancer and writer, by profession. She had started her career by working as an assistant to director and Dhanush’s brother Selvaraghavan in her debut film 3. She has written a debut book, ‘Standing on an Apple Box’, and is also scripting for her next film. Besides that, she also has an effective participation in politics. It is expected that the filmmaker, dancer and writer, a daughter of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, will bring attention to gender issues in India.
Accepting the honour to serve the UN, Aishwaryaa said her new responsibility would be to ensure safe public and private spaces for women - “Their effective participation in politics, decision-making and the economy are essential steps towards gender equality and the empowerment of women”.
Her appointment was announced by Lakshmi Puri, United Nations Assistant Secretary General and UN Women’s Deputy Executive Director in Chennai.
