The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (EMA) has revamped scholarships for children of NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO). This is the Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC).
SPDC is the new scheme for the NRIs/PIOs children of to pursue under graduate courses in Indian universities and institutions in a variety of fields except medical and its related courses. Under SPDC, the children can pursue the courses in Indian universities and Institutes in a range of fields except medical and related courses.
The revamped SPDC programme set for academic year 2016-17 will be applicable for pursuing courses in central universities, institutions accredited “A” Grade by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), also other institutions such as the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs).
Now, the SPDC has been extended from 40 to 66 countries, including 17 Emigration Check Required (ECR) countries. The number of scholarships has also been increased from 100 to 150, of these 50 slots; one-third is reserved for children of Indian workers in ECR countries studying in India. Income criteria will be applicable to all categories of students. Importantly, the Indian passport holders need to obtain Emigration Clearance from the office of Protector of Emigrants (POE) for going to 18 countries which are mostly in Gulf region.
The scholarship amount is based on income criteria to all categories of students and the amount is provided to students for the payment of tuition fee, admission fee, hostel fee and other post admission services, but excluding the payment of food charges.
The portal spdcindia.gov has been developed to process applications for the scholarship, which can be submitted online till September 23rd, 2016.
