Indian female Wrestler Sakshi Malik is named as Haryana’s brand ambassador for Beti Bachao, Beti Padao (save daughter, educate daughter) campaign in Haryana. Malik is the first-ever Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in the sport of wrestling. In the 58 kg category wrestling competition, she had defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova to win the bronze medal.
Announcement in this regard was made by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar after awarding Malik with 2.5 crore rupees and Commendation Certificate. Importantly, on her return to India from Brazil, Malik was accorded a rousing welcome by the state government.
“It was my dream to win an Olympic medal and I worked really hard for that. Now that I have won it, it seems as if I am living my dream”, said the Indian Olympic Bronze medalist.
The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) campaign aims to spread awareness about the declining trend of Child Sex Ratio in India. Indian Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD), is the nodal agency for the implementation of the scheme.
The main objective of the campaign is to prevent gender biased sex selective elimination by strict enforcement of laws with stringent punishment to violators, and also generating the necessary awareness and improving the efficiency of welfare services meant for women. Haryana particularly is a state that has a skewed gender ratio. Malik hails from the Mokhra Khas village in the state’s Rohtak district.
