The Five feet eight inches tall, Haryana lad Manoj Kumar in the 64kg welter weight category made a huge difference for the Indian contingent by defeating two times Olympic bronze medalist Evaldas Petrauskas of Lithuania.
Manoj was up against a formidable opponent but the Indian boxer was up for the challenge offered. Though, he was scratchy to start with but got his act right and landed scoring punches to pocket the first two rounds. Manoj used his long reach to good effect throughout the bout and scored at regular intervals to maintain his lead. Manoj's tactics also found favour with the majority of judges, who awarded the initial rounds to him on a split decision. With the win, Manoj became the second Indian to advance to the next round of Rio Olympics after Vikas Krishan had made it to the next round in the middle weight category.
In the end, it was a marvelous performance by Manoj who clinched the bout in his favour from a double Olympic medalist with a superior performance. The Indian camp did not have high hopes of Manoj winning but he proved it to be otherwise by bringing in all his experience and skill to out point his opponent.
