India’s men’s hockey team broke a 26-year Olympics jinx by entering quarterfinals after winning their third group league encounter against Argentina, though the South American opponent provided India a run for their money, especially in the second half. In its third group match, India beat Argentina 2-1, move to joint top in standings.
India had the early lead in the first quarter with a goal from Chinglensana Singh, while Kothajit Singh scores a brilliant field goal to give India 2-0 lead against Argentina. Though, the South American team went in the match, unbeaten and naturally with a lot of confidence, India banked on its defence, and it played well.
Though, India won its first match against Ireland by 3-2. It unfortunately lost 1-2 to Germany in the final seconds of the play. The loss may have dented some hopes in the Indian camp, especially when PR Sreejesh led-side dominated the Germans for most part of the game but conceded a goal in the final three seconds to lose out.
By entering the quarterfinals now, the eight-time Olympic champion have risen the hope of the Indians for a much needed medal from Olympics in Hockey.
