The Indian Government has expressed its considerate for the distressed women in NRI marriages, especially cases where they are abandoned by their NRI husbands.

The Indian government is considering setting up a committee to formulate a standard operating procedure (SOP) to be followed while dealing with cases of NRI men abandoning their wives, after India’s Women and Child Development (WCD) Ministry received several such complaints.

Indian missions in the several countries often find it difficult to implement the Indian government’s scheme to assist females duped or deserted by their NRI husbands, primarily due to strict privacy laws of such countries and exorbitant legal expenses.

India’s WCD Minister Mrs. Maneka Gandhi recently met External Affairs Minister Mrs. Sushma Swaraj and requested her to constitute a joint committee to develop an SOP.

According to a senior WCD Ministry official, "a joint committee with one Joint Secretary each from Home Ministry, Ministry of External Affairs and Women and Child Development Ministry will be constituted within this week. SOP will be developed within a month's time”.

Once such a committee is constituted, it is expected to proactively share with missions across the world and in future cases of abandoning and other kinds of abuse met by women in marriage with a NRI such SOP could be taken into consideration and accordingly the case will be dealt.
