Amitabh Bachchan (John Biswas), an elderly man stunned by grief, fights for justice for her dead granddaughter even after eight years of her missing; she underwent kidnapping and then murder. Throughout the movie, he searches for clues related to the abduction and murder of his granddaughter
Angela, granddaughter was kidnapped eight years ago with the criminal fleeing away after her killing.
The disappearance of an abducted child has turned two people’s lives upside down; one is that of John and the second is the main investigating officer Martin (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) turning to GOD after being unable to catch the criminal and has become Father Martin now. Sarita (Vidya Balan) new officer in the police station keeps telling John to forget the case as it is not easy to keep the case under investigation.
The plot turns when a kidnapping is done in the same manner eight years since the Angela kidnap, John after getting a small clue from fish market starts to investigate the case with the help of slightly reluctant Martin.
The movie is owned by Amitabh Bachchan with his shaky voice and body language, as he connects immediately as an old man waiting for justice for her granddaughter. One moves with his pain and his desire to seek justice in failing judicial system. His acting is certainly a master-class and a treat to watch.
The other lead actor, Nawazuddin does not fail either; he is a perfect fit for the character adding dry humor and wit to the grim movie. Vidya commands the screen as police woman who is failing to prove herself in the new kidnapping case; her face shows the determination and concern of catching the man this time.
Acting of the three actors pep up the movie, perhaps what may disappoint is the pace of the movie. The movie seems to be stretched after a while leaving in search of more thrills and twists. Revelation of killer does come as a surprise at the end however does not leave one completely convinced.
Director Ribhu Dasgupta has brought character to the story by adding the atmosphere and charm of the city of Kolkata. Broken building and old by lanes add to the mystery of the plot. Tushar Kanti Ray's cinematography brings life to the city making up for the slow narration of the story.
The movie is a watch for the acting skills of the three leading characters, moreover its ability to maintain the suspense rights till the end makes it a must-watch for those who like whodunits but if one is looking for a thrill like Hitchcock movie, they may find it a bit disappointing. A better pace could have certainly lifted the movie a notch higher.
