A heavily-armed afghan-origin gunman identified as Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, 29, shot and killed 50 people and wounded 53 others in carnage at a Florida nightclub in the wee hours of Sunday (12th June), before being killed by the police. The US authorities have described this as a "domestic terrorism incident". This also makes it the biggest terror attack on US homeland after 9/11.
"At ... 0500 hours this morning, the decision was made to rescue hostages that were in there. Our officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. The suspect is dead," Orlando Police Chief John Mina told a press conference.
The US President Barack Obama has asked federal agencies to take over the investigation into the incident.
