An Indian-origin lawyer from Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party has been elected member of the parliament following his victory in the by-election held at suburban Bukit Batok constituency.

Mr. Murali Pillai, a lawyer from Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) garnered around 61% of the votes, while Singapore Democratic Party’s Chee Soon Juan got just around 39% of votes to win the by-election. The Bukit Batok seat was vacated when previous PAP MP David Ong resigned in March after an alleged extramarital affair with a PAP activist.

Mr. K. Muralidharan Pillai, better known as Murali Pillai is a Singaporean lawyer and politician, as well as a former police officer. Mr. Pillai worked in the Singapore Police Force before his admission to practice law in 1996. In his legal career, Mr. Pillai is currently the head for commercial litigation in Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP.

Currently, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, leader of PAP has absolute majority in the house.
