The Foreigners and NRIs will soon be able to book train tickets online for domestic travel in India from abroad using their credit or debit cards issued by respective foreign banks as the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is making necessary changes in its system to enable international transactions. Till now only American Express International cards were accepted through American Express (AMEX) Payment Gateway system, only for booking purposes, but now IRCTC has allowed other international cards for making the necessary payments.
According to the IRCTC CMD AK Manocha, acceptance of all global cards will fulfill the demand of foreign tourists and they will no longer depend on other agencies for the purpose, adding that the overall aim is to facilitate foreigners and NRIs hassle-free ticket booking facility.
Buddhist circuit trains, luxury services such as the ‘Palace on Wheels’ ‘Maharaja’ and other tourist specials are immensely popular with the international travellers, who will now be able to book tickets for regular services once the system is operational.
IRCTC ticketing site is currently equipped to take the load of 15,000 tickets in a minute which means 250 tickets in a second. Approximately, at present a little less than 60% of the total tickets are booked online through IRCTC gateways.
